This book was written in 1959 and promptly censored to death. It expressed the sentiments of the beat generation, the precursors to the counter-culture of the 60s when I grew up and was exposed to all kinds of seditious and scandalous concepts.
The Age of Aquarius was going to set was going to set us all free. Movies had broken free of the Hayes code. Gay liberation, modern feminism and the environmental movement were all gaining steam. Vietnam still raged and some people were questioning the need for Wars of Unclear Purpose. Nuclear Armageddon hung over our heads like a sword of Damocles.
Woodstock was full of naked happy hippies. I was dying inside to be a part of it all. Too bad that world was a million miles away and all I felt was unwelcome and unwanted. What I had was whatever freedom I could find in my guilty closet and that is what I lived with until I was old enough to leave home.
